6 things to know before you try whitening strips

If you have ever put a strip on and spent the next ten minutes wondering whether it was supposed to tingle like that, this list is for you. Read these six first — they take two minutes, and they make the rest a lot calmer.

1

Strips are a gel held against your teeth

A whitening strip is a thin piece of film coated with a peroxide gel. You press it onto your front teeth, leave it there, and the gel sits against the enamel for the length of the session. That is the whole mechanism — no light, no heat, nothing you have to operate.

The strength of that gel is the one thing that differs most between brands.

2

Sensitivity is common — and manageable

Some people notice their teeth feel more sensitive partway through a course. It is usually a passing feeling rather than damage, and there are simple ways to take the edge off.

If it does not settle when you ease off, stop and ask your dentist.

3

Strips whiten teeth, not dental work

Peroxide gel works on natural enamel. It cannot change the colour of anything that is not your own tooth.

So crowns, veneers, fillings and implants stay exactly the colour they are now. If your front teeth are a mix, expect the natural ones to shift and the rest to hold — which is worth knowing before you start, not after.

4

Placement decides whether your gums sting

The gel belongs on your teeth, not on the soft tissue above them. Most gum discomfort comes down to placement, and it is easy to fix.

  • dryBrush and dry your teeth first — the strip grips better on a dry surface.
  • vertical_align_bottomLine the strip up with your gumline and stop just short of it.
  • front_handFold the excess behind your teeth and press it smooth.
  • clean_handsWipe your fingers after each strip so gel does not travel.
5

Courses take days, results fade

Strips are not a one-session thing. A typical course runs for around two weeks, once or twice a day, and the change builds gradually rather than overnight.

How long it lasts varies from person to person — and it is not permanent. Coffee, tea and red wine put colour back on over time, so a top-up session every so often is normal.

6

Ask your dentist first in a few cases

Whitening strips are a surface cosmetic, not a treatment. See your dentist before you start if any of these describe you.

When in doubt, a dentist can tell you in one appointment.

What this kit will not do. It will not whiten crowns, veneers or fillings. It will not give you a set number of shades, and results fade with coffee, tea and red wine. If you are unsure whether strips suit you, ask your dentist before you start.
